These sad-eyed chubby little figures are tanuki, or badgers,
ranked outside a shop where they are sold. Tanuki figures bring good luck.
The badger has a prominent place in folklore and story, as in the old tale
of the priest and the badger-kettle, which was sometimes a badger, and
sometimes a kettle, and in its transitional state something between the
two.
